Girl Scouts stay at former internment camp

This news clip is from 1946, just a year after World War II officially ended. Girl Scouts in Minnesota spent a week at the internment camp in New Ulm, MN staying in the barracks and viewing some murals drawn by the Germans.

Girl Scout Tragedy at Glen Bernie Falls

Meet Miss Lillian D. Arhelger, a young woman full of promise. She had completed college and worked as a school teacher. One summer in 1931, she worked at a Girl Scout camp as a counselor with the girls. When the unthinkable happened, she gave her life to save a little girl. Pet Cemetery at a Girl Scout Camp

While updating the Girl Scout Camps - South Dakota page, I found information about Camp Woodland that started a pet cemetery in 1965. I contacted the local council and discovered that the pet cemetery is still active. Shown below is a partial brochure. The full brochure is shown on the camp page.

Girl Scout Betty

Have you ever bumped into Girl Scout Betty? She was a comic strip character that ran for 53 episodes way back in 1931-1932. Betty and her Girl Scout training helped her through all sorts of trials and tribulations. It took a lot of hunting and searching to find her, but I was able to uncover several episodes. The author was renowned illustrator Montfort Amory. She now has her own page. Check her out!

Resurrecting The Vintage Girl Scout Blog!

Well, it's been years since I last posted. Wow, how time flies. I couldn't believe my blog was still available after all this time. So much has changed in Girl Scouting since my last blog.

For my first post I'm sharing something I found online. Someone is selling a Camp Juliette Low T-shirt (in grey or black), but something is not right! It may be hard to see, but instead of a "GS" on the trefoil, it has "UE". I strongly doubt the makers of this new t-shirt are authorized by GSUSA. When I visited the site it was written in a foreign language.

Confessions of a Genealoholic

Well, as I mentioned in my last blog, I was working on my family history. I thought I could stop! But I was so curious as to what I might find, I ended up spending all my time lately hunting down my family history.

This meant that the Vintage Girl Scout Online Museum and it's email haven't been checked lately.

But that didn't stop you wonderful visitors from sending in some great stuff. Michelle L. sent in a troop's crest image of an Iris on khaki fabric (troop crest page) and bugle stars! (girl member pins page). Linda M. mailed me a CD of her Girls' Auxiliary collection (Kid's Collectible section - Girls' Auxiliary), and also sent images of Furture Homemakers of America charm (Kid's Collectibles FHA) and the newest Girl Scout Gold and Silver Awards rings (Rings page). Betty D. sent an image of a Camp Fire Girls Bluebird locket (Kid's Collectibles - Camp Fire Girls Jewelry). Alana R. sent in some sad news about the Canadian Girl Guide Rose.

Annelies S. mailed me some great updates on the Girl Scout Membership pins through the years. I'm having trouble with my scanner - but I hope to get them online real soon.

I updated the Camp Fire Girls earned patches page a bit - it still needs work.

I leave for camp next week! Once again, I'll be working as the camp nurse at our local Girl Scout camp for the summer. We still don't have internet connection at camp.

Enjoy your summer - Nancy

New Page - Girl Scout Earrings!

After using all my free time in the month of April to work on my family history I'm now back updating the Vintage Girl Scout Online Museum.

Kathy S. sent in many images - including several Girl Scout earrings. This brought forth the newest page - Girl Scout Earrings. I ended up with about 30 different pairs of GS earring images. This project made me aware of how times have changed - there are NO Girl Scout earrings before 1969.

She also sent in other images - I'm going through each email one at a time and updating.

Linda M. has continued to keep me well stocked with old GS camp patch and cookie patch images to add.

Carleen H. sent in images of camp patches from the Seven Lakes GS Council.

Now it's May and our thoughts begin to turn to CAMP!

Evolution of the Girl Scout Membership Pin

New page shows the detailed work of Cal Holden and Annelies Squeri on identifying and catagorizing the Girl Scout Membership Pin, both the traditional design and the contemporary design. This excellent work also has some great images of the pins. I am very honored to have the permission to share this work on my website!

New Girl Scout Memorial Marker Found

I found an image of a Girl Scout memorial marker while surfing the net. It's dated 1959 and is near Beavercreek, Ohio. It's found on the Memorials and Markers page.

I've been busy hunting down the names of old and new Girl Scout camps. I'm at about 1,000 camp names so far and the website was updated yesterday with the latest names. If you notice that I'm missing a camp you know of, please send the info in!

The Cookie patches and pins page is rolling along, but I'm still missing some patches.

A new page is almost ready to launch, Girl Scout cookie cutters.

Cookie Patches

New page launched with Cookie Patches through the years. Can you help? I am missing several years worth of patches.

Camp Patches & Pins section was updated again - extinct camp information keeps popping up.

Wednesday, January 24, 2007

I am launching a new mission for the Vintage Girl Scout Online Museum - collecting and sharing those Girl Scout camps that have gone by the wayside. Most councils have them, old camps that were sold, for one reason or another - leaving behind nothing but fading memories.

Call me a sentimental fool, but there is something special about Girl Scout camp. Yet, every year camps that can't carry their financial weight, are sold off to developers.

I've just completed a new set of webpages devoted to listing Girl Scout camps and showing their patches, pins, pennants, brochures, whatevers. I drew heavily on a list posted at Scouting Links of Girl Scout camps. Now I'm adding in whatever information I have on extinct Girl Scout camps.

While archiving some scrapbooks for my council recently, I found information, albeit very little information, about some old Girl Scout camp such as; Dorothy Belle and Tillicum Hollow that used to be a part of our council's area many years ago. Yet, there is hardly anything known about them.

Let's not lose any more history! If you know of old Girl Scout camps, or have images of pins, patches, brochures, etc - send them in and I'll post them on the website's newest pages of Girl Scout camps old and new.

95th Anniversary Pins are here!

I'm always excited to see new Girl Scout pins! There are 2 versions of the 95th Anniversay pins this time. Check them out on the Anniversary Pins page.

Since so many councils will be changing their names as they redefine their boundaries, there probably won't be many council 95th anniversary pins like there was for the 90th.

An unusual Council's Own badge came in - Panama Canal Council's Own. The sender can't remember the name of the badge, but it must come from the time when we still posessed the Panama Canal, and the military and their families were there in enough numbers to warrant this badge. Just a guess.

New page - I not much of a fan of collecting patches, however, I've fallen in love with the quilt patches put out by Patch Corner. Are there more than 4 designs?

2007 Cookie Pin added.

Finally Finished - Council's Own Badges

Special thanks to Michelle J. who sent me a HUGE batch of council's own badges, try-its and IPs images and to Angie O. who sent me still more new images!

It took me awhile but I reworked the Council's Own pages and added all the new images. Now ALL the badges are on 1 page, ALL the try-its are on 1 page and ALL the IPs are on 1 page. I also added a page of unique or unknown badges - Maybe you know?

Also, S.J.K. sent in some more information on the Rockwood pins. It may take awhile - but someday we'll narrow down the dates on those pins!

January Updates

Beverly M sent in an image of the NEW Macy pin! It's on the MACY page.

I'm reworking the Council's Own pages, so some pages won't be accessible for awhile. Michelle J. sent in a whole bunch of new images of council's own! Now the pages will be divided into 3 sections; Try-its, Badges and IPPs.

The Try-its page is up and running.

Girl Scout Trivia

Yesterday, while sorting through some boxes of archives at my council office I learned:

  • The official launch date of the Wings Girl Scout program was July 13, 1942.

  • In 1924, the Girl Scout Leader magazine admonished girls and leaders to complete the Red Cross course for the badge requirements. The Red Cross course WAS 30 WEEKS LONG!

Council's Own Badges

Whew! Who knew there were so many council's own badges, try-its and ipp's out there? I've spent some time lately sorting out over 200 images of these things and have added them to the website - and I know there are more out there.

This information is important to save. 20 - 50 -100 years from now - will anyone remember what these unique badges meant? Even now, it's really hard to identify council badges that are only 25-30 years old.

I've divided these badges on the website into 9 catagories, but it's not an exact science. Take a look when you have the chance, there are many great designs!

Updated Badges

The whole Girl Scout Badges section is being freshened up with improved images. I'm always on the lookout for the best images of the badges. Check out the "error" badge of Rock Tapper and the differences in the Scout Naturalist badges. A wonderful person (M.L.) sent in these great images.

(See how this badge differs from the image already on the website)

Coming soon - the Worlds To Explore badges, try-its and IPPs. As an email recently reminded me - the program started in 1980! That's nearly 27 years ago. It's about time the Vintage Girl Scout Online Museum added them.

Still working on the Council's & Troop's Own Badges page. My focus is the images of these unique badges, not the requirements. There are some great resources for the requirements out there on the web.

Fun and Games!

A little updating and adding to the website. J.L. had been kind enough to send me images of a Brownie bracelet not on the website. It took me awhile, but it's finally on the Bracelets page. New page added - GS Fun and Games, just a few of the vintage games of Girl Scouting.

Camp Is Over!

... and I'm home again. Sadly, the day after I returned from camp a dear Girl Scout friend passed away. She was just as much interested in the "old stuff" as I was. We worked on the Historical Committee together in our council. She loved visiting the website and then emailing me about where I got things wrong! I'm going to miss her.

I'll be updating the website frequently now. I just added an image of a Mariner's ring and some international pins from 1941 (b&w images from a book) that are different from the more familiar versions we know.

A nice lady seen in an unusual image of the Girl Scout ring that I'm going to add.

Angie Olds sent me several images over the summer that I've filed away, so they'll be added soon too.

Photos of my Camp Nurse office

It was built in the late 1930's or 1940's. There are plans to bulldoze it soon to make way for a new Infirmary. After spending the last few weeks living here, I'm going to hate to see it go. I like to imagine how many campers and filed through this door looking for a band-aid (or popsicle) throughout the years.

Tombstone Trefoil Mystery

Jane G. of Virginia sent in some wonderful photos and great information about a tombstone with the Girl Scout trefoil on it. And there's a bit of a mystery to it - maybe you can help solve it! On the Memorials & Markers page...

Saturday, July 22, 2006

Mystery Solved!

Well, it took awhile, but Angie Olds solved the identity of a mystery pin on the Unknown Pins page. Sadly, it was never a Girl Scout/Guide pin.

Di sent in some images of International pins that have been added to the website; Russia, Nepal, Peru, and more.

Life as a camp nurse at the Girl Scout camp continues on as it has more many, many years. Homesickness, sunburns and twisted ankles fill my days. Camp fires, s'mores and song fests fill my evenings. What a great job!

New WAGGGS Asia Pacific Region Pins!

There are new pins, in both versions of the Asia Pacific Region pin. The larger one is now sleek and shiny. The smaller one has minor changes which are hard to see, but if you compare them side by side (on the WAGGGS page) you'll see the changes.

Angie sent in an event pin from Norway - shown on the International Pins N-P page.

I'm new to blogging, but I think you can added comments if you like!

Updates July 2006

7.5.06 - Leaving for camp tomorrow for several days. Finally put the Girl Scouts on Stamps page back up, with a few new details added, and I updated the Anniversary page with a few new items from the 50th anniversary. Update - I haven't heard back from the Chicago Girl Scouts about those charms.

Angie Olds sent in some great images of Guias de Mexico (Girl Guides of Mexico) membership pins.

I've got a question. If the United States Post Office offers this cute little Boy Scout bear on their website, why can't they offer a Girl Scout version?

7.2.06 - Home for the weekend from summer camp. Girl Scout Summer Camp Is The Best! Angie sent in a pin from Iceland and 2 new ones from Denmark. She also sent in some new book covers. There are new Girl Scouts of Taiwan items and an undated GS bracelet. Janet L sent me photos of her Brownie bracelet that I will be adding soon.

Updates June 2006

6.23.06 - The new GSUSA catalog arrived! So... the 2007 Cookie pin is white enamel. The new adult charms from this year aren't in the new catalog - I found that surprising. The newer Brownie dolls now have a Brownie Scout uniform to wear - I'm glad, they sure don't look Girl Scout otherwise.

6.22.06 - Is this pin familiar?

6.21.06 - Angie Olds has been busy! She sent in some cookie charm images from the 1960's Chicago area GS - at least we think they are all cookie charms. Some say cookie on them, others don't. So I've emailed the GSC of Chicago to find out. Check out the Cookie Pins & Charms page for the what appears to be a complete set.

6.16.06 - Angie Olds sent in this image of a Girl Scout musical note. Anyone know what the purpose of the pin is? How old the pin is?

6.15.06 - I've been working on a new page for Council and Troop Own's badges. It's still a bit rough around the edges, but it's a start. I had no idea there were SO many council's own badges out there!
Girl Scout Council's Own

6.13.06 - Brownie Points was a category on the game show Jeopardy last night. All five questions had to do with Brownie Girl Scouts!

6.8.06 - Why is there a loop on this mini trefoil pin?

Updates 2005/2006

Web Changes
2005 - The Vintage Girl Scout Online Museums had been through some trying times lately. The hosting company (ivillage.com) decided - on just a few days notice - to stop hosting personal websites. I was only able to salvage a bit of web sites.
However ... now the Vintage Girl Scout Online Museum is being re-formatted and re-launched, on it's own domain, safe from the whims of others. It's going to take awhile to add all the information and images from the other site, so please be patient with me.
The site was launched way back in November, 2000. It's moved 3 different times, hopefully, this will be it's last move!

3/25/05 - Added a few more pages of the "lost" Girl Scout Badge Museum.
4/1/05 - Troop Crests and a couple more Badge pages added.
4/3/05 - Senior Interest Patches added to the Uniform Section, Girl Scout Rose added. Having some trouble linking all the pages - so I'm putting a site map on this page.
4/4/05 - Progress - all badge pages have been completed. I'm now working on restoring the "uniform" pages.
4/5/05 - Starting work on restoring the pins to the museum
4/6/05 - Rings completed
4/9/05 - Ernie Altvater sent in a completely different Brownie Marigold Seed packet - it was only 15 cents! Check out the GS Rose page. Visited the Guide Shop in Victoria, BC, Canada. The ladies there were so wonderful! They answered all my questions and I was able to add and update the Canadian Guide page. I also pulled out some notes that Louise St. Germain sent me on Canada pins just before the old website was lost. New Canadian Girl Guides page is under the International Pins Section.
4/10/05 - working on the International Section
4/12/05 - continuing to add and update the International Section. Queen's Guide Award added to the updated UK Pins page. Added a wide variety of Adult Girl Guiding pins from the UK to the UK 2 page. Found a resource that notes the Queen's Guide Award should be called a Badge, not an Award, since it is earned.
4/13/05 - International Pins G-Z updated and online, Philippine Girl Scout Pins have their own page. I've added small images of several vintage GG/GS uniforms throughout the International section. Eva Kiehl sent in an update on the Girl Scout Rose! Louise St. Germain sent in an image of a c.1920 UK Brownie pin.
4/17/05 - Major overhaul and update of the International Section . New source for the Girl Scout Lily found! Pin pages added.
4/18/05 - Almost completely transferred all the Pin pages, Camp pages being transferred, Camera, Knives 1 & 2 up and running.
4/19/20 - Non-uniformed clothing, hankies and scarves, GS bracelets, up and running.
4/20/05 - Several pages added, updated and organized.
4/24/05 - South Vietnam Girl Scout pin and uniform images added (International T-Z Section).
4/25/05 - The Altvaters donated 2 wonderful images; the full set of 3 Brownie bracelets for 1957 and a unique GS hankie. Mariner Girl Scout and Wing Girl Scout pages added.
4/28/05 - Brownie page added to Uniforms section. Iran Girl Guides (banned country) added. Vietnam Girl Guides (also banned) updated.
5/5/05 - Robert Rodgers emailed several camp patches and an ID strip. Compiled all sorts of images of one of my favorite badges - Hostess. Check out the Hostess badge from other countries on the "Ode to a Badge" page.
5/7/05 - Completed the "Resources" section, that includes information about future plans - Can you help?
5/8/05 - Updated the Uniforms section, improving the khaki uniform page and adding the grey-green uniform page.
5/11/05 - Louise St. Germain sent in some great images; an older Mexican Fairy Pin, Singapore Stick pin, older Canadian Brownie Hostess badge and a U.K. Sea Ranger pin. All can be found where you'd expect them, except the Brownie Hostess - it's on the Ode to a Badge page.
5/21/05 - Finals are over and I am free for the summer! Cookie Boxes page up, Pendants and Charms started. Louise St. Germain sent in a side-by-side image of the font differences in the Canadian Girl Guide membership pins. Thailand Hostess badge added to the Ode to a Badge page - who knew there were so many?
5/25/05 - Pendants and Charms completed - 97 different necklace & bracelet charms! Can't find the date for the Mustard Seed Pendant - anyone know?
6/13/05 - Donated images of a new GS ring, a different Senior Encampment Pin (in the camp section) international pins (Yemen, Taiwan, New Zealand, Spain, etc), Macy & Convention patches, and some camp patches have been added! Thanks to Kathie, Angie and Linda!!!!
6/17/05 - Annelies Squeri compiled detailed lists of Brownie and Girl Scout hankies - wonderful for all collectors! Check the bottom of each Hankie page.
6/18/05 - I learned that Grey Green uniformed fabric ( 1928 era) sold for homemade uniforms was watermarked - just like the khaki fabric.
9/3/05 - After a long break, I'm finally back updating and adding pages. The newest page is Girl Scout Purses. Other pages that were updated - Piper Project, Rings (who knew there were 3 variations of that little Brownie Girl ring?) and Camp Pin. Thanks to Kathy and Loree for the new stuff!
9/11/05 - Worked on the Purses and Wallets page - there are now 49 different items shown - all with dates!
12/30/05 - Aggie Donch wrote with some dates for the Girl Scouting USA pin and HQ pins( on the TOFS and HQ pages).
11/26/05 - I combed through my files of international items and updated several entries. Did you know there were two version of the South African pin? I also found items from countries no longer part of WAGGGS, such as Burma & Cuba.
11/24/05 - New Asia-Pacific Region "Reach for the Region" pin added to the WAGGGS page.
11/19/05 - Just got a copy of the 1954 Thirteenth Biennial Report of WAGGGS - had some line drawings of old membership pins, including some from Finland, Germany, Costa Rica and Lichtenstein that I had not seen before. I've added the images to the international pages.
10/21/05 - Michelle Jermy sent in many images and information on the Canadian Girl Guide pins, as well as some that ended up on the United Kingdom page. Check out the updates!
2006
6.7.06 - I've started a new website called Kids' Club Collectibles, because I developed an interest in other youth organizations; their history, their uniforms, their insignias, their collectibles, etc. I only have a few pages so far - Camp Fire Girls, Future Homemakers of America, 4-H Clubs, Girls Friendly Society, Junior Audubon Society -with plans for more. Check it out!
6.2.06 - new page of Girl Scout plates - Girl Scouts In The Kitchen, also updated the non-uniform but official GS clothing page with some new images. Can't date one of the shirt - any ideas?
6/1/06 - Angie sent in an interesting example of 2 sizes of books, but there is no information that this ever happened. This means there are even more editions to find for our collections. Angie also sent in a couple of new labels that are different - these were found on the vintage camp-type T-shirts.
Anyone out there remember the "If I were a Girl Scout in 1776" program? I'm hunting for images of those badges, plus other Bicentennial things related to GS. I've got a few, plus the handbook. New page:
If I were a Girl Scout in 1776
5/28/06 - It all started when Angie sent in some great images of the dust jackets of old Girl Scout fiction books. As I started putting together a webpage, it grew and grew and grew! Then I added Bookmarks and Bookends and voila - I just had to start a new "wing" to the museum - the Library. So, make yourself a cup of tea and come visit the Library and see 2 - yes 2 - web pages of Girl Scout fiction books - most in their dust jackets, and a few other things relating to books.
Girl Scout Library

5/25/06 - Angie Olds sent in some Girl Scout Uniform patterns to help make the page more complete AND some images of Brownie Fiction Book covers - so there's a new page - GS Fiction Books. I added some more book cover images, put I don't have the info to go with them yet, nor are they in order.
5/25/06 - I've launched a SHOP page, to help pay for the cost of running this website.
5/22/06 - Thanks to Sue for pointing out that the Green Angels page was missing! It's up and running now. My other website - Summerpearl Rosary - is finally back online - and with it the Catholic Girl Scouts page (note - you'll be leaving this website to see the page, but there is a return button on the page).
5/16/06 - Ernie was kind enough to send in some images to improve the Diary page, and something brand new - Girl Scout Camp Fund Stamps - check out the new page. Dottie Farmer was able to put a date on a Rockwood Pin, Anne Varberg pointed out some interesting info about troops & companies.
5/16/06 - Through a computer update I lost all my email and email address to my summerpearl@comast.net address. If you sent something recently and don't see it here in the updates, I likely lost it. Please resend!
5/2/06 - Ernie Altvater sent in images of his great collection of Girl Scout passes. Check out the new page!
3/25/06 - Girl Scout Compasses page added to the Camping Section
3/24/06 - New page - Girl Scout Flashlights completed - whew! 46 different kind! It's in the Camping Section.
3/23/06 - Michelle J. sent in a color image for the new Diary page! Patty D. asked a question tipping me off that I was missing a patch from the ID Strips page (I found an image and added it)
3/20/06 - updated the Girl Scout Clothing page with 2 more swim suits.
3/19/06 - New Page - Girl Scout Diaries - complete collection of images from 1929 - 1972.
3/19/06 - New page added - Girl Scout Labels - so far, 24 different labels from 1915 to 1980
3/18/06 - New page added - GS Wrist Watches. Now you can easily date your Girl Scout watch! Who knew there were at least 29 different varieties??? Also updated: Unique Pins page, the WHC Pin page with new info, Pendants & Charms with a date for the Mustard Seed Charm, Fun Pins and the needleworks page.
3/4/06 - Due to problems with spamming, I've removed my email link at the bottom of the page. Please contact me at summerpearl@hotmail.com
2/28/06 - added images of vintage Girl Guide/Girl Scout uniforms to the International page. I also found insignia information from Norway's Girl Guides showing quite a variety of patches.
2/22/06: Check out the newest page - the Girl Scout Tea House! Several pages have been updated including Girl Scout Rose, Brownie uniforms and International pages..

Opening Blog

Here it is, the first blog for the Vintage Girl Scout! Here I will post the updates to the Vintage Girl Scout Online Museum (found at www.summerpearl.com), as well as share things I find interesting about Girl Scouting.
